The chair and the three hosts outline why they see dialogue between scientists, executives and policy-makers as the key to tackling the challenges of our time and outline the main issues of the conference.
Changing geopolitics and the future of energy
China's low carbon energy strategy: the path to sustainable energy development
This session will focus on the rise of global energy demand and the potential for controlling energy consumption through increased efficiency. We will look at best practice examples in housing, transportation and energy distribution and ask what will work best in the world’s emerging cities.
We will also focus on how the world’s energy-intensive industry, increasingly concentrated in China and other developing countries, could be transformed by energy-saving technologies. And we will debate the relative importance of regulations, incentives and financing in realising these efficiencies.
This session will focus on the changes taking place in energy supply in the coming years and decades. Speakers will debate the energy mix of the future. Could renewable energy sources dominate and what needs to happen to support their development? Will coal still have a place in powering cities?
What is the potential of biomass? Is nuclear power a solution? We will also discuss how the energy mix in Chinese and other fast-growing cities might differ from those in the developed world and look at what it will take to guarantee a sustainable and efficient energy supply.
These short sessions will each feature one speaker presenting the latest research and initiatives in their field, with time for questions and discussion.
